Orientation – part 2

Have you ever thought of making a dress from fruits and flowers? I made with a banana.

I am back with the second post of orientation period. I am very excited to share this part of orientation with you guys because today am I going to share my favorite class and also some fun. So, let’s get started.

One day mam came and told us that tomorrow we have to bring flowers, fruits, and knife. We had no idea what we are doing to do with those things. Anyways, after reaching the hostel, I and my friends went to park for flowers. We gathered some flowers and did a lot of fun there and took some pics there. Then we went to the market and bought some fruits. We could bring any fruit, so, I chose banana.

Next day, when we went to the class, we got printouts of a female figure. we took ivory sheets [hard white sheet] and traced the figure from printout on the ivory sheet and mam told us to make dresses with fruits and flowers. We thought about it that how to make a dress from these things. Then mam gave us a demo and then we started to make the dress. Funny thing was that first of all, I ate my banana and then from the banana peel, I made dresses. The whole room was filled with the fragrance of flowers and fruits. We all enjoyed this class because making a dress from fruits and flowers was something that we hadn’t had in mind while choosing fashion designing.

Next day, there was Color Blocking class. Color blocking is making a dress from solid colors. In that class, mam gave us 2 or 3 sheets. On those sheets, there was a model figure and we had to choose solid colors. A solid color is a color that contains no half-tone or gradations. E.g. red, green, blue, yellow etc. We had to make a combination with solid colors and color the figure. In that class, I learned about colors.

Then there was a class with Anuradha mam. In that class, students were taught how to made a dress from paper with proper measurements. Unfortunately, I missed the class. But after the class, I learned the pattern of dress from my classmates.

Also, I did lots of fun with friends. During breaks, we used to go Krishna food corner where we enjoyed ice cream, sambar, dosa. During that period was the birthday of one of my classmates, Shivam. The class gave him a surprise and cut cake and celebrated his birthday.

A class was very interesting in which we learned a technique named as Button Masala. In that class, mam taught us how to wear a fabric which seems like a dress, without sewing it and just by using buttons and bangles. We also did some experiments with fabric. That was really a new thing which I saw and learned.

Then there was a class in which we learned how to wear a scarf in different styles. In that class, mam also tried a scarf on me. During the entire period, we all were playing with scarfs and trying to come up with a new style.

Also, we had a class in which we learned how to dye the clothes. The things that we used for dye were dye colors, rice, dal, coins. That class was very interesting and I also made samples after reaching my room. Some of the patterns with dye are in pictures below.

In another class, we made textures with colors, crushed newspaper, and aluminum paper. Colors always reminisce me of my childhood.

I have nearly covered the orientation period. Oh, how can I forget the party? I will tell you about the party in next post.

Stay tuned…

Orientation – part 1

Hi Everyone,

So, let’s start with my class experiences. From May 16, 2016 to June 12, 2017, it was orientation period in college. The purpose of orientation was to give students a platform where students could be introduced to fashion before the commencement of classes and also, to introduce to each other.

I have so much to tell you about orientation because that was a whole new experience for me. But I will try to cover the whole orientation period in some posts. This is the first post in the orientation series. I will tell you about some of the classes that left an impact on me from learning, entertainment and experience perspective.

  1. In the orientation, I remember one class in which we had to get a print out of walking figure. We had to copy it and cut it into the proper shape. Now we were supposed to select designs from magazines and cut it in a way that made a dress. Next step was to paste the paper dresses on the figure that we had cut. From this exercise, we got to see our creativity. After the class, there was a group photo and we were given homework also. We were supposed to make at least 2-3 dresses in this way. The next day, our work was displayed in the foyer area and it was the most interesting thing which I could remember.
  2. There was also an illustration class in which I learned how to handle the pencil and how to make a gradient. The most interesting thing in this class was that I learned about how to make face features. Special focus was given to nose, eyes and lips. I like to draw even before joining college so, I enjoyed this class a lot.
  3. Before this class, we had to bring an old T-shirt. I had no t-shirt so when I told that to my cousin brother, he said that no need to buy a new t-shirt. You could take my t-shirt. I had no idea that it will be cut next day. When I reached the class, I came to know that it will be cut. In this class, we were taught how to make a design in an interesting way and how to give a new design to an ordinary t-shirt. After learning this, I also cut my t-shirt into a top. I was very happy to see this because it was made by me. That top was looking very cool but when my cousin saw his t-shirt turned top, his wordings were, “Don’t expect me to wear this”. We all had a good laugh.
  4. When there was an embroidery class, we were supposed to bring anchor threads. Anchor threads are used in embroidery. In class, we learned basic stitching and after learning the stitches, I made an embroidery in form of rose flower. This class was easy for me because I knew some basic stitching already. Also, I learned some new things and new ways of doing things.
  5. During orientation, apart from practical classes, theory class were also there. We were supposed to do research on designers and different brands and then make a presentation on it. From this research work, I got to know about famous brands and designers. Also, I got to know how these brands were started. Learning about the history of fashion was a good learning experience for me.

Here are some pics from the above classes.
