Orientation – part 2

Have you ever thought of making a dress from fruits and flowers? I made with a banana.

I am back with the second post of orientation period. I am very excited to share this part of orientation with you guys because today am I going to share my favorite class and also some fun. So, let’s get started.

One day mam came and told us that tomorrow we have to bring flowers, fruits, and knife. We had no idea what we are doing to do with those things. Anyways, after reaching the hostel, I and my friends went to park for flowers. We gathered some flowers and did a lot of fun there and took some pics there. Then we went to the market and bought some fruits. We could bring any fruit, so, I chose banana.

Next day, when we went to the class, we got printouts of a female figure. we took ivory sheets [hard white sheet] and traced the figure from printout on the ivory sheet and mam told us to make dresses with fruits and flowers. We thought about it that how to make a dress from these things. Then mam gave us a demo and then we started to make the dress. Funny thing was that first of all, I ate my banana and then from the banana peel, I made dresses. The whole room was filled with the fragrance of flowers and fruits. We all enjoyed this class because making a dress from fruits and flowers was something that we hadn’t had in mind while choosing fashion designing.

Next day, there was Color Blocking class. Color blocking is making a dress from solid colors. In that class, mam gave us 2 or 3 sheets. On those sheets, there was a model figure and we had to choose solid colors. A solid color is a color that contains no half-tone or gradations. E.g. red, green, blue, yellow etc. We had to make a combination with solid colors and color the figure. In that class, I learned about colors.

Then there was a class with Anuradha mam. In that class, students were taught how to made a dress from paper with proper measurements. Unfortunately, I missed the class. But after the class, I learned the pattern of dress from my classmates.

Also, I did lots of fun with friends. During breaks, we used to go Krishna food corner where we enjoyed ice cream, sambar, dosa. During that period was the birthday of one of my classmates, Shivam. The class gave him a surprise and cut cake and celebrated his birthday.

A class was very interesting in which we learned a technique named as Button Masala. In that class, mam taught us how to wear a fabric which seems like a dress, without sewing it and just by using buttons and bangles. We also did some experiments with fabric. That was really a new thing which I saw and learned.

Then there was a class in which we learned how to wear a scarf in different styles. In that class, mam also tried a scarf on me. During the entire period, we all were playing with scarfs and trying to come up with a new style.

Also, we had a class in which we learned how to dye the clothes. The things that we used for dye were dye colors, rice, dal, coins. That class was very interesting and I also made samples after reaching my room. Some of the patterns with dye are in pictures below.

In another class, we made textures with colors, crushed newspaper, and aluminum paper. Colors always reminisce me of my childhood.

I have nearly covered the orientation period. Oh, how can I forget the party? I will tell you about the party in next post.

Stay tuned…
